Eye Spy: Key Eye Care Tips That Shouldn’t Be Overlooked

What’s the first thing you notice when you look in the mirror? Your eyes and what surrounds them. Whether you’re all puffy from that red eye flight or from a bad night of sleep, or they are simply highlighting your hereditary elements such as those pesky dark circles, the skin around the eyes is your face’s megaphone screaming out to the world—among other things—that yes, you had in fact 2.5 hours of sleep last night and there’s nothing hiding it. It’s your face’s truth-teller that sometimes you wish it wasn’t so into you know, telling so much truth.

The skin around your eyes are also very thin as compared to the rest of your facial dermis and therefore needs their own moisturizing treatments to ensure that it is hydrated properly. In today’s world of one size fits all, we (mistakenly) think that applying our facial moisturizer around the eye area takes care of it. But that’s not the case. You wouldn’t throw your delicates in the regular cycle, right? Because that’s what the delicate cycle is for. That’s exactly how we should look at the skin around our eyes. They are the delicates of our face.

Here are some of the usual suspects that create problems for the skin around the eye area:  

  1. Diet. Alcohol and salty foods are the main culprits when it comes to foods that can cause the puffiness around the eyes. So, cut down on that post-work G&T and step away from the processed and salty foods (remember salt=fluid retention). Increase your fruit and veggie intake and drink lots of water. And speaking of hydration …
  1. Dry Skin. In addition to hydrating your skin internally, give your skin that extra TLC by giving it the proper moisture it requires. When your skin is dry it immediately translates to wrinkles around the eyes giving you a tired look. Moisture is key to bringing the delicate skin back to life.
  1. Irritants. Whether they are ingredients found in makeup or irritants found in fragrances, the skin can be prone to react to it negatively when it comes to elements that it just doesn’t like. Using scent-free or gentler cleansers and lotions soothe the sensitive area of your face.
  1. Leftover makeup. Yes, we’ll say it one more time for those in the back: Always cleanse your face thoroughly to get rid of your makeup. Any leftover gets in the creases and can block pores.
  1. The H Factor. Whether it’s hereditary or your hormones causing dark circles under the eyes, brightening ingredients can help even out the skin tone even on those darker pigments around the eye area.
